XXXIII Sunday in Ordinary Time - Year C

From the Gospel according to Luke 21.5-19.

M hile some spoke of the temple and beautiful stones and votive offerings that adorn, said
"will be days when all that you admire, not one stone upon another that will not be destroyed."
they asked him, "Teacher, when will this happen and what will be the sign that things are about to take place?".

This will be your opportunity to bear witness.
Settle it in mind not to prepare your defense;
I will give you words and wisdom which all your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict.
You will be betrayed even by parents, siblings, relatives and friends, and put to death some of you
will be hated by all for the my name.
But not a hair of your head will perish.
By your patience possess ye your souls.

COMMENT

"They have all these things happen." Nothing so strange in our lives. The strange would think otherwise, to wonder what we are called to live. Who was redeemed by the Lord, who is now inseparably yours, who has washed in the blood of every moment of his life, participates in the fate of his Lord. It is a party and for this reason, every effort of violence that has descended on the Lord, about who actually descends on earth, offers his own flesh and his own being. The Church is the Body of the Lord and live our lives is an integral part. None of us can be indifferent to the eschatological struggle that is taking place on the stage of history. Nor is the headache that accompanies the chores of a mother apparently always the same hidden within the walls of the house. Nothing is anonymous in our lives. Nothing is indifferent, every second is contained in the destiny of humanity. For this war, so-called natural tragedies, hatred, resentment, persecution, the sword that sliced \u200b\u200bcleanly through even families, health, each side of our life is a treasure of grace for the whole world.

Everything passes, nothing, not even the most majestic temple will remain stone by stone. Our lives lost to the sweet name of Jesus, our lives stolen by His love and torn to concupiscienze, the moments of our lives that unfold along mysterious paths are the sign of eternity of which all life is imbued with, as the jar that contained the preziossimo nard, the most valuable, with which Mary anointed Jesus a few moments before the Cross. So the events that follow one another in our lives open up the jar because it spreads the wonderful aroma, essence capable of redeeming every evil in the world the infinite love of Christ, His victory over sin and death resulting from our hours, one day as blood and water baptism and the bread of life, sprung forth from her side. The world groans waiting for this one love that can save everyone. The story, even today, strewn with dead bodies, is nothing more than this poor cry of despair awaiting final love. Perseverance, a gift from heaven, is our seal on the world, our life is the Lord's pierced side, the door wide open on the heart of God, selfless love for every man prepared. Our life lost for Christ was delivered, and in Him for the salvation of the world.

"This will give opportunity to bear witness"

The experience of the martyrs and witnesses of faith is not only characteristic the Church's beginnings but marks every epoch of its history. In the twentieth century, and maybe even more than in the first period of Christianity, many were those who witnessed the often heroic faith and suffering. How many Christians on every continent, in the twentieth century showed their love for Christ by the shedding of blood! They have suffered forms of persecution both old and new, they experienced hatred and exclusion, violence and murder. Many countries of ancient Christian tradition once more became lands where fidelity to the Gospel demanded a very high price. In our century, "the witness to Christ borne even to the shedding of blood has become a common inheritance of Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans and Protestants" (Tertio Millennium adveniente, 37)

I witnessed it myself, during my youth, so much pain and many trials. My priesthood, from its very beginning, "was the great sacrifice of so many men and women of my generation" (Gift and Mystery, p. 47). The experience of World War II and subsequent years led me to consider carefully and with gratitude, the shining example of those who, from the early twentieth century to its end, met persecution, violence and death for their faith and their behavior was inspired by the truth of Christ.

The coming of Christ

"No stone will remain unturned, everything will be destroyed."
